Everyone knows there's a problem with water - 2.2 billion people don't have have a safe way to drink water (meaning it's either dirty or the journey to clean water is very long), and of these 2.2 billion; 1.2 million people die every year because of the diseases in dirty water.
These aren't groundbreaking facts, they're things we all already know. But to solve this problem we have to understand why these facts are facts. We broke it down (see picture below).
The reason why we chose to look deeper into dirty water is simple. Let's say everyone get's water and it's really easy for them to access this water. Then what? They'll obviously drink that water, but if that water's dirty then more people will just end up dying.
We should first figure out how to clean dirty water. Everything else comes after.
Once we realized we wanted to look into cleaning dirty water, the thought that came to our minds was "Why can't I just use the filter I have at home?" Well, that filter doesn't work for all the viruses & bacteria that are in actual dirty water, instead it works for tap water to help filter out the chlorine or if you got the higher end one's maybe some led.
We dove deeper into water filters and came across this filtration process called reverse osmosis. You just apply a ton of pressure onto the end where there's dirty water, and this'll force the water to go through a membrane. The membrane only allows specific particles to go through, filtering out the dirty water particles.
The reason why this doesn't work though is because you need electricity to operate it, and the populations in places that have dirty/no clean water also don't have access to electricity. (See data below)
If we know that reverse osmosis won't work, are there any other filters that could work but are cheap and scaleable? Nope. Don't believe me? See data below...
Once we knew water filters wasn't the way to go we started looking into water purification pills. Right now the best one in the market right now is the Mightie Company's Pills. Now although they're very effective and can prevent typhoid, cholera, dysentery, as well as other water-borne diseases, each tablet can only treat 3 cups of water (0.75L). And on top of that, each tablet costs 0.2USD.
